Jumbo – Large shopping center along Ring Road III
Jumbo Shopping Centre is located in Vantaa, alongside the Kehä III ring road, close to Helsinki-Vantaa airport. Jumbo’s foundation stone was laid before the recession of the 1990s due to the great demand that arose in the area for a shopping centre towards the end of the previous decade. The construction companies Haka and Polar purchased the area from Elanto and named the newly established development company Vantaanportti Oy. The company also purchased the neighbouring residential areas and business park land. Jumbo was completed in October 1999.
The objective was to make it the largest shopping centre in Europe. The most interesting period in Jumbo’s history was during the design and development stages. In the first year, Jumbo attracted 6 million customers, and the customer flow has been rising ever since. The extension, completed in 2005, brought about a significant increase in the number of customers. Many prestigious guests, including the mayors of Vantaa, have visited Jumbo over the years.
Jumbo currently employs approximately 1,800 people. The shopping centre is owned by Unibail-Rodamco, Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company, Kesko and HOK-Elanto.
